Our Legacy & History

Discover the remarkable journey of Nabinchandra College from its humble beginnings to becoming a premier educational institution

A Short Profile Of The College

Nabinchandra College, Badarpur, is situated in the historic railway town of Badarpur in the Sribhumi district of Assam. Located at the heart of the Barak Valley and at the junction of the districts of Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi. The town enjoys the privileges of its strategic location and is the gateway to the Barak Valley. Badarpur is well connected with other Northeastern states viz Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura through surface transport and railways. Badarpur is a hub of connectivity, trade, and cultural exchange, creating a favourable environment for the growth of eminent educational institutions.

Strategic Location

Located at the heart of Barak Valley, Badarpur serves as a gateway connecting Assam with Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, making it an ideal educational hub.

The origin of Nabinchandra College dates back to 13 July 1969, when it began its journey with only the Arts stream. During that period, students from Badarpur and surrounding areas faced serious challenges in accessing higher education. The nearest colleges were located at Karimganj and Silchar, nearly 55 kilometers apart, making daily travel difficult and expensive. Poor communication facilities, financial constraints, and the loss of productive time discouraged many aspiring students from pursuing college education. Recognizing this pressing need, the people of Badarpur and neighboring areas came together with a shared vision to establish a local institution of higher learning. Their collective efforts resulted in the founding of "Badarpur College" on 13 July 1969, an initiative marked by strong public support, commitment, and a spirit of social responsibility.

In its early years, the college faced several infrastructural constraints, including the absence of a permanent campus. Arts classes were initially conducted in a rented building near the present site of the college. Despite limited resources, the dedication of the teaching staff, non-teaching employees, students, and the local community ensured the steady functioning and gradual growth of the institution. In 1972, the college was renamed "Nabinchandra College" in memory of the late father of Sri Basanta Kumar Das, a prominent benefactor from Karimganj, whose generous contribution played a significant role in the development of the institution. The college shifted to its present campus in 1974 and was brought under the Assam Government's deficit grant-in-aid system in 1975. In 1976, it received recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission (UGC), marking an important milestone in its academic journey.

— Foundation Story

Over the years, Nabinchandra College has steadily expanded its academic horizons. The Commerce stream was introduced at the Higher Secondary level in 1981 and at the degree level in 1984. Although the degree-level Commerce program was temporarily discontinued in 1989, it was successfully reintroduced in 1996. Finally the commerce stream was provincialised in 2013 by the Govt. of Assam. Responding to the growing demand for science education, the college introduced the Science stream at the degree level in the academic session 2006–07 and at the Higher Secondary level in 2008–09.

In keeping with national priorities and growing needs for skill-based and vocational education, the Nabinchandra College achieved a significant distinction when it was selected by the Government of Assam to offer the Bachelor of Vocational (B.Voc) degree in Information Technology from the 2017–18 academic session. The college is among only five institutions in Assam and the only one under Assam University, Silchar. Additionally, since the 2014–15 session, the college has been functioning efficiently as a TDC Examination Zone of Assam University, Silchar, further highlighting its administrative capability and institutional credibility.

Unique Distinction

Nabinchandra College is among only five institutions in Assam and the only one under Assam University, Silchar to offer the B.Voc degree in Information Technology.

Quality assurance has remained a central focus of the college's development strategy. Nabinchandra College received its first NAAC accreditation with Grade B in 2004, a landmark achievement that encouraged systematic quality enhancement initiatives. Following this, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) was established to monitor, maintain, and improve academic standards. The college was re-accredited by NAAC in 2011 with Grade B (CGPA 2.72) and successfully completed its third cycle of NAAC accreditation in 2019. These accreditations reflect the institution's sustained efforts toward academic excellence, transparency, and continuous improvement.

In recent years, the college has witnessed remarkable growth in both academic and infrastructural domains. Student enrolment has increased steadily, reaching approximately 4,000 students across various programs. To meet this growing demand, the college has strengthened its teaching and non-teaching workforce. The Central Library has been extensively upgraded and now houses a rich collection of textbooks, reference books, journals, magazines, bulletins, and national and international newspapers. Departmental libraries have been established in all academic departments, and the Central Library has been fully computerized, with online access to digital resources made available to students and faculty members.
