Disseminating economic knowledge and analytical thinking since 1969
The Department of Economics in Nabinchandra College, Badarpur, has started in the year of establishment of the College in 1969. It has been disseminating education and knowledge in Economics in Pass, Core & Honours courses among the students of both Degree and Higher Secondary levels since its inception. From the very beginning, both Honours and General Courses are offered by the department, initially under Gauhati University and later on under Assam University Silchar since 1994. From 2018 to 2025 the department offers CBCS courses and it starts FYUG curriculum from the session 2023-2024 under NEP 2020.
Initially, the student strength was negligible but gradually it has recorded an increasing trend of student enrolment over the years. As of now the student strength of the department has been increased to around 800 numbers in both HS and Degree level.

Presently, there are five faculty members serving the department with the student strength of 300 (H.S), and around 500 at UG level. Sri Soumitra Choudhury served as HOD till December 2024 and thereafter Dr. Nazim Uddin Khadem has taken the responsibility of working as HOD since January 2025.
Every year the department publishes its annual Wall Magazine "ECOZONE" which gives the opportunity to the students to publish their creative writings and also helps the learners. It maintains a departmental library also that benefit both faculties and students in their teaching-learning activities. The department also conducts Live Projects, Field Study, Dissertations, Students Seminars, etc. among the students as part of the course requirement which also helps and motivates the students to learn practical knowledge apart from classroom learning.
The department has consistently shown good results over the years in both H.S. and Degree level. In 2022, Ms. Ananya Sen achieved 1st Class 1st Rank in BA (Hons) in Economics under Assam University, Silchar, and received Gold Medal award. Following this, in 2023, Ms. Preeti Rani Biswas achieved 1st Class 2nd Rank in BA (Hons) in Economics. Recently in 2025, Misbahul Islam has also achieved 1st Class 1st Rank in BA (Hons) in Economics and received Gold Medal award under the same university.
Moreover, many students secured outstanding Grades in UG Examinations and there has been a positive outcome. The department is continuously working for its excellence and all round development of the students along with their employability as faculty members are committed to giving their best services towards the healthy growth and success of the department.
