Brief History of the College

Brief History of the College

The beautiful and well-built Nabinchandra College, Badarpur that stands impressively in the heart of Badarpur town had its beginning in the late 1960s. The people of those years faced many a problem in sending their children for higher education to Karimganj or Silchar as there was no college between these two towns lying fifty-five kilometres apart. Distance, money, wastage of time and poor communication facilities were the chief hurdles which made them think about an alternative arrangement. The result was the unanimous decision of setting up a college at Badarpur. This noble idea soon acquired flesh and bones through the selfless and untiring efforts of the people of all walks of life in the form of a college in 1969. The sweat and blood of the then staff, students and the general public helped in laying a strong foundation and in nurturing the new born educational institution.

As the college had no campus of its own, the classes of Arts faculty were run in a rented building in a plot very close to the present site. The college was christened “Nabinchandra College” in 1971 after the late father of Basanta Kumar Das, a major donor. It was shifted to the present site in 1974 and was brought under the deficit system of grants-in-aid rules of the Assam government the following year. Since then it never looked back, but always marched ahead, crossing many a hurdle on the road to progress, achieving side by side the physical development of the college building , the campus, and the academic growth of the educational institution.

The College introduced Commerce at H.S. level in 1981 and at degree level in 1984, which continued till 1989. After a gap of Six years, the College re-introduced these programmes in full fledged manner. At present department of Commerce is a vibrant department with two honours courses viz 1. Accounting and Finance and 2. Business Management. The service of the employees of Commerce Stream has been provincialized by the Government of Assam w.e.f. August 13 2013.

In 2006-07 Session the college introduced Science Stream under Assam University, Silchar with three subjects - viz Economics, Mathematics and Ecology & Environmental Science. At present, it is a very much vibrant stream with honours in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Ecology & Environmental Science. The students of the stream have been performing very well with all Assam Place in H.S. Level and Assam University first position. It is worth mentioning here, one Priyanka Dutta became the 1st class First in Assam University, Silchar in B.Sc Final Mathematics Honours in the year 2016. Same Priyanka Dutta also became the Best Graduate 2016 (securing highest mark in all the three streams) of Assam University, Silchar.

It may also be mentioned here that Nabinchandra College, Badarpur is the only institution till date in Assam offering B.Sc honours programme in Ecology & Environmental Science.

The latest academic expansion of the college is Bachelor in Vocational Course in Information Technology (B.VOC in IT). Thanks to the Government of Assam and Assam University, Silchar, Nabinchandra College, Badarpur, the only institution under Assam University, Silchar has successfully introduced B.VOC in IT w.e.f. the session 2017-18.

A correspondence course centre under the Institute of Distance and Open learning (IDOL) of Gauhati University has been functioning in this college for some years. But Gauhati University IDOL has issued a notification to stop new enrolment under IDOL in the colleges affiliated to Universities other than Gauhati University w.e.f. the year 2017. Hence, Nabinchandra College, Badarpur has also stopped enrolling new students under IDOL since 2017. Nabinchandra College, Badarpur became a Partner Institute of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) under its convergence scheme to offer different conventional and specialised courses to the people of Badarpur and adjacent areas.
