Brief History of the College

The beautiful and well-built Nabinchandra College that stands impressively in the heart of Badarpur town had its beginning in the late 1960s. The people of those years faced many a problem in sending their children for higher education to Karimganj or Silchar as there was no college between these two towns lying fifty-five kilometres apart. Distance, money, wastage of time and poor communication facilities were the chief hurdles which made them think about an alternative arrangement. The result was the unanimous decision of setting up a college at Badarpur. This noble idea soon acquired flesh and bones through the selfless and untiring efforts of the people of all walks of life in the form of a college in 1969. The sweat and blood of the then staff, students and the general public helped in laying a strong foundation and in nurturing the new born educational institution.

As the college had no campus of its own, the classes of Arts faculty were run in a rented building in a plot very close to the present site. The college was christened “Nabinchandra College” in 1971 after the late father of Basanta Kumar Das, a major donor. It was shifted to the present site in 1974 and was brought under the deficit system of grants-in-aid rules of the Assam government the following year. Since then it never looked back, but always marched ahead, crossing many a hurdle on the road to progress, achieving side by side the physical development of the college building , the campus, and the academic growth of the educational institution.

The College introduced Commerce at H.S. level in 1981 and at degree level in 1984, which continued till 1989. After a gap of Six years, the College re-introduced these programmes in full fledged manner. At present department of Commerce is a vivrant department with two honours courses viz 1. Accounting and Finance and 2. Business Management.

In 2006-07 Session the college introduced Science Faculty under Assam University with three subjects - viz Economics, Mathematics and Ecology & Environmental Science. The College has also obtained permission to teach Physics and Chemisry at Degree level. The college has also applied to the Assam University for giving permission to introduce Botany and Zoology as Pass combination subjects of B.Sc. Course and Honours Courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Botany from the current session. The college has already introduced Science Stream at H.S. level with effect from the academic Session 2008-2009. The first batch of H. S. 1st Year Science Students was promoted to the 2nd Year with 100% success scoring outstanding marks.

The College has recognised need to introduce Career oriented programmes at U.G. Level and accordingly has introduced in 2004-05 a course in Functional Arabic sponsored by NCPUL, under H.R.D Ministry, New Delhi. In 2006-07 Session, the college has introduced U.G.C. sponsored Career Oriented programmes in Computer Application in Business, Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship Development.A correspondence course centre under the Institute of Distance and Open learning (IDOL) of Gauhati University has been functioning in this college for some years. The latest addition in the academic expansion is the joining of Nabinchandra College as a Partner Institute of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) under its convergence scheme to offer different conventional and specialised courses to the people of Badarpur and adjacent areas.

The college has, over the years, made significant progress on academic front— diversification of subjects and streams, increase in the intake of the students, increase in the number of faculty members, upgrading the library facilities, considerable improvement in teaching-learning process resulting in better results etc. The all-round progress of the college was assessed by the NAAC in August 2004 and was subsequently accredited with B grade. Since then ,leaving aside the post-accreditation complacency, the college has been striving hard to face newer and greater challenges ahead.
